Stuart McAlister media training

Today's media is dynamic and multifaceted, with diverse disciplines, each demanding unique skills and standards.

Similarly, media training must reflect this diversity, requiring a flexible and adaptive approach. I specialise in enhancing the content of existing courses but also tailoring support to individuals seeking additional guidance, ensuring that training is both effective and aligned with the unique needs each learner.

Career Highlights

♦️ Bosnia
Deployed on multiple assignments to the region, I reported from key locations including Sarajevo, Grebak (Gorazde),

Vitez, and Pale, documenting the profound challenges faced by everyone involved with the conflict.

♦️ South African Elections
From our bases in Johannesburg and Cape Town, we reported on the aspirations of a nation on the brink of change, capturing the historic victory of Nelson Mandela and its significance for South Africa’s people.

♦️ Marc Dutroux
As Belgian authorities unearthed the grim evidence of Dutroux’s crimes, I documented the shocking discoveries and meticulously detailed the life and actions of one of history’s most notorious serial killers and child predators.

♦️ The Death of Princess Diana
Within an hour of the accident at the Pont de l’Alma in Paris, I was on-scene, covering one of the most poignant and extraordinary events of my career.

♦️ FIFA World Cup
Amid the global spectacle of football’s greatest tournament, with an audience of 1.5 billion viewers, I captured the atmosphere and unparalleled excitement of this iconic sporting event.

♦️ Kosovo

As NATO’s final bomb struck Serbian targets, we crossed the border to document the escalating tensions and reveal the stark realities faced by those in the region.

♦️ Concorde Crash
Reporting on one of aviation history’s most significant incidents, I covered the tragic Concorde crash near Paris, an event that marked the beginning of the end for the legendary supersonic jet.

♦️ Ellen MacArthur
At just 24 years old, MacArthur finished second in the Vendée Globe, a solo, non-stop, round-the-world yacht race, becoming the youngest to achieve such a milestone. The BBC sent me out to sea to capture her crossing the finish line.

Not everything is headline news. Equally important are the everyday stories that shape our communities - local news, arts, crime, and politics. While they may lack the glamour of lead stories, they are essential for capturing the heartbeat of society and to keep the public informed.

Key Contributions in Training and Mentorship

Ahead of the agency’s official launch, I developed and conducted extensive training programmes for journalists and producers, equipping them with essential skills in camera operation and video editing. These sessions laid solid foundations for delivering high-quality, impactful journalism.

♦️ L’École Supérieure de Journalisme, Paris

As a recognised industry professional, I was invited to mentor students in television news production. My role encompassed hands-on training, fostering creativity, and instilling technical expertise, all while building their confidence and nurturing individual talent, preparing them for future careers in the media.

♦️ Windsor Colleges Group, Maidenhead

Being a regular member of the Media Industry Professionals Review Panel, I actively collaborate with students to refine their skills across a broad spectrum, including camera operation, lighting techniques, editing, storytelling, and equipment maintenance. These dynamic exchanges foster growth, inspiration, and mutual learning.

♦️ 1-2-1 Stills Camera Operation, Surrey

Covering essential elements such as framing, mastering f-stops, lighting techniques, and basic editing skills. Guiding individuals to fully appreciate the capabilities of their equipment plays a crucial role in helping them grasp the broader creative possibilities.
